14: Cassie

It had been nearly twenty-four hours since Hector stormed off, and Cassie was worried. Hector could be so bullheaded sometimes that it wasn’t a surprise when he hadn’t returned by the time she woke up in the morning, but now she was afraid that he wasn’t just avoiding them. If an agent found him, she’d have no way of knowing.

Cassie and Stephanie stayed busy helping Luisa, but there wasn’t much to work on in the small tunnel where they lived. They’d pulled out the food and supplies from Cassie’s bags and added them to the small stockpile already there. Luisa left for a short time, saying she had to run some errands, but she didn’t want the two girls to come with her in case someone was looking for them. She’d only been back a few minutes when the curtain lifted and Hector walked in.

“Hector,” said Cassie, “where have you been?”

“Around…” He answered with a weak voice, and he kept his face turned away like he was embarrassed.

“Oh, no,” said Luisa, her face red with anger. “You can’t just say you were around like you just went to the store and back. You owe everyone here an apology.”

“I’m sorry,” said Hector, his face still turned away.

“Turn and look at us when you say it.”

Hector turned to apologize again, but Luisa screamed when she saw the black bruise around his eye. The skin was swelled up so that it was almost totally shut.

“What happened to you?” asked Luisa.

Hector turned his face away again and said, “I got into a fight with some kid in the underground.”

“Don’t lie to me, Hector. Tell me what really happened.”

Hector turned back with an angry look on his face, but it quickly changed to resignation. “I was with Steve. He made a guy from a casino angry and then disappeared. The guy punched me.”

“I told you Steve was trouble,” said Luisa. “You shouldn’t go anywhere near him. Now come over here and let me put something on it to ease the swelling.”

“I can do it,” said Cassie.

Luisa started to protest, but Cassie walked over and turned Hector’s face so she could see his eye better. She put one hand on his forehead and one on the cheek below the bruise. She concentrated her thoughts and directed the warm sensation out of her hands and into the skin around Hector’s eye. When she pulled away, the skin had turned a dull yellow color like the bruise was mostly healed, and the puffiness was totally gone.

Luisa gasped and stared at Cassie in surprise. She’d been somewhat skeptical the night before, and Cassie almost laughed when she saw Luisa make the sign of the cross over her chest.

“I can’t believe it,” whispered Luisa.

“I told you we could do some strange things,” said Cassie.

“Yes, but I thought you were just exaggerating. If I hadn’t seen that, I’d have never believed it. Can you all do that?”

“We can all do something, but it’s not the same.”

“Yeah, I was able to talk to my brother telepathically,” said Stephanie.
